Voices of Dog Tag: Betsy Eves
For this Voices of Dog Tag, we’re featuring Cohort 4 alum and Army Spouse/Caregiver Betsy Eves––an entrepreneur and tireless advocate for caregivers and veterans who uses her free time to give back.
Betsy is no stranger to service and volunteerism; her experiences as a caregiver for her husband have led her to become a huge advocate for others. She was a 2017 Dole Caregiver Fellow, and continues to work with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to champion issues facing caregivers. During her time at Operation Gratitude, she was an integral part of developing their caregiver programming and outreach. Her most recent advocacy efforts include policy and law, working with PolicyVets on changemaking for veterans and military families.
Betsy has also given back to Dog Tag in the time since she’s graduated––from repping Dog Tag at events with our partners, to teaching a learning lab to current fellows, to handing out cookies at a job fair, she’s always advocating for the fellowship. Over the holidays last year, she worked as Holiday Baskets Supervisor for our bakery team, and even got her daughter to join her on the holiday baskets team too. As Betsy says, “My family loves Dog Tag. The Eves family is always happy to jump on the Dog Tag bandwagon and do all the things to help.”
At her core, Betsy is an entrepreneur. The businesses she’s founded include a baking and lifestyle blog, a leadership accelerator for military spouses, and a marketing/communications consulting firm. Entrepreneurship is intrinsically part of who Betsy is; her original goal during the program was to use what she learned to open her own bakery. However, the fellowship was a welcome reality-check; she realized she didn’t want to “bake all day,” and actually wanted to pursue a career focused on communications and business. Of the fellowship, Betsy says “It completely changed for the better where I was going.”
Entrepreneurship remains an important part of Betsy’s life; she is returning to her roots of the business she started post-fellowship, BE Creative Consulting, and has decided to be her own boss again. For Betsy, “Dog Tag made it okay for me to dream about what my life could be and helped me envision the future I want.” Her future plans are to become a business owner herself by turning her baking blog into a brick-and-mortar storefront. She is currently pursuing a Policy and Leadership certificate at Harvard’s Kennedy Leadership School in order to help her with this goal. Betsy’s future is bright; once she sets her mind to it, she can accomplish anything.
